Don’t Eat the Marshmallow… yet!
Marshmallows are sweet confection – a candy. They’ve been around since the mid-1800s. They are called “marshmallows” because part of the early recipe called for sap from the root of the marshmallow plant.
However, I’m not going to talk about Marshmallow’s recipe. I want to share a very good book known as Don’t Eat the Marshmallow… yet! ![]()
It’s a very thought provoking book by Joachim de Posada and Ellen Singer. This is the kind of inspirational book that I love to read.
Well, if you want to succeed in anything, you need to invest your time reading motivational and inspirational books (instead of reading magazines on celebrities or fashions.. ha..ha..ha).
Don’t Eat the Marshmallow… yet! told some stories of Jonathan Patient (a billionaire) and his chauffeur, Arthur. He taught Arthur the Marshmallow principles with everyday life stories. Arthur who has been working as a driver for so many years due to no paper qualification, applied what her boss taught and a year later, he resigned and go to university. ![]()
The story started with Jonathan’s own experience when he was 4 years old. He participated in an experiment about the effects of delayed gratification or pleasure in children.
Kids his age were placed in a room, one at a time. An adult came and put a marshmallow in front of him. She told him that she will come back in 15 minutes. And, if he didn’t eat the marshmallow when she’s not around, she would reward him with a second marshmallow when she returned.
Just imagine, a 4 year old boy trying to resist a yummy marshmallow in front of him. And, nobody was around to say no. Beside, 15 minutes is a very long period for a toddler. To eat or not to eat?
Jonathan didn’t eat the marshmallow. But, he almost ate it about a dozen times. He even licked it once. But he was trying hard not to eat it because the woman promised him two marshmallow instead of one, if he didn’t eat the first one yet. He tried everything from dancing to singing – to avoid himself from eating.
15 minutes seemed like hours and when the woman returned, she gave her the second marshmallow.
And, those were the two best marshmallows he ever ate, because he earned it! ![]()
Years later, the researchers gathered the ‘marshmallow kids’ and came out with the result.
It turned out that kids who didn’t eat the marshmallow or those who resisted eating for a longer time – did better in school, got along better with others and managed stress better than the kids who ate the first marshmallow as soon as the adult left the room.
The marshmallow-resisters turned out to be much more successful that the marshmallow-eaters.
You see, the ability to RESIST enjoying whatever you have now, will reward you with much much much more greater things in the future. And, that’s the Marshmallow Principle.
You can replace the marshmallow with anything in life – money, good food, designer handbags, branded shoes, expensive makeups, jewelries, TIME used watching TVs/movies/gossiping/day-dreaming/whining/nagging etc.
It’s all about choices. Your choice. ![]()
I’m sharing this because I know many of you are so excited to know how I managed to get that RM9,083.66 income from Google Adsense. All that I can tell you for the time being is, I didn’t eat my marshmallows.. ha..ha ![]()

baru tau…baru teringat since blogspot is from google, maybe nuffnang bagi kelonggaran supaya tak dipotong status glitterati tu, tapi kak ros, leh ke kita pilih ads jenis ape nak display mcm nuffnang ?(contoh: in nuffnang, kita boleh reject letak iklan rokok dan alcohol beverages)

fatin, resist the tempation to everything yg menghalang kita dari berjaya di masa depan.. not to cash pun satu contoh
katalah now ada RM1,000 duit nuffnang, so kita resist dari cash out dah belanja now to buy a branded shoe… say kita hold for another month.. maybe dah dapat 2 kali ganda.. then kita boleh get something more valueable than the shoe.. maybe a laptop to fokus on blogging (kepada yg takde laptop la) so boleh dapat berpuluh kali ganda lebih banyak dari RM1,000 in the future.. can a branded shoe buat you dapat lebih banyak duit?
another contoh is TIME.. ramai kata takde time nak berblogging.. sibuk sebab full time keje.. kalau sahm pulak sibuk jaga anak..semua ada 24 hours tapi kenapa certain people macam banyak masa to multi-task handle lots of blog (tapi dia pun full time working juga)
sebabnya TIME tu macam marshmallow la.. terutama TIME tengok TV, time tidur siang, time tidur awal, time bangun lambat, time termenung, time berborak, time window shopping, time jalan-jalan every weekend.. kalau nak berjaya you have to resist doing all that untuk satu tempoh masa.. bila dah berjaya baru la boleh tidur awal ke.. bangun lambat ke…
