How to Backup Blogger Blog?

The whole blogging world was in chaos last Friday’s afternoon due to unexpected outage of Blogger’s server. The outage caused many blogs hosted on Blogspot were unable to be accessed – both by owners and by readers.

I was trying to read a favorite blog of mine on Blogspot when suddenly a stupid bX-59cppw error message popped up on my screen. I thought it was due to my internet browser… but it was the same in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Firefox. Fortunately, it’s nothing serious. And, all blogs seem to go back to normal.

You see, that’s the downside of using a free blogging service. They can do anything to your blog without notice. In December 2008, Blogger did some random deletion of blogs… causing the owners losing everything in their blog!!

It’s a nightmare if you didn’t do regular backups of your blog. Backup means you save or transfer a copy of your blog contents (including pictures) to somewhere else.

I believe there are many ways to do blog backup. Some are easy.. and some are quite technical and complicated.

The most easiest way is to back up your Blogspot blog to other blogging platform. I suggest you sign up to WordPress.com and do your backups there.

How to Backup Blogger blog to WordPress blog

Here’s some steps you need to follow.

1. Go to WordPress.com and sign up if you haven’t got an account.

2. Login to your WordPress account.

3. Scroll down until you see Tools > Import. Click on the Import.

4. WordPress can import from a few other blogging platform such as Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad and even from existing WordPress blog. Click on the Blogger button to import blog on Blogspot.

5. You will need to authorise the import. Just click the Authorise button and sign in to your Google account.

6. Click Grant Access when prompted like below.

7. You’ll be shown the following page. Here you can choose which blog (if you have many) to import to WordPress.

It may takes some time to import if your blog content is big. Please be patience as it’s worth the wait.

If later you want to convert the WordPress backup back to Blogger, just follow the below steps.

How to Export WordPress blog to Blogger blog

Blogger does not currently support importing a wordpress blog, but you can still do it easly:

1. Login to your WordPress account and navigate to the Dashboard for the blog that you’d like to transfer to Blogger.

2. Click on the Tools > Export. Download the WordPress WXR export file by clicking on Download Export File and save this file to your PC.

3. Click to go to WordPress2Blogger. Browse to that saved document and click Convert and save that file to your PC. In this file will be the contents of your posts/comments from WordPress in a Blogger export file.

NOTE: This hosted application will only allow downloads smaller than 1MB.

4. Go to your Blogger blog. From your dashboard, click Settings > Basic and click Import to import the converted file.

huda, ada domain sendiri pun kena buat regular backup ye.. tapi cara backup domain sendiri lain la ye.. ada backup wizard kat cpanel tu

kalau guna wordpress kita boleh letak URL tu without wordpress kan? eg: mombloggersplanet. com instead of mombloggersplanet.wordpress.com.

unlisted, wordpress tu kalau mombloggersplanet.com tu kena bayar hosting dan beli domain naim sendiri…

mombloggersplanet.wordpress.com tu untuk free blog kat wordpress

MBP ni memang guna wordpress tapi bayar hosting + beli domain name.. every year kena bayar.

qastalani, yes 2.. satu kat blogger, stau kat wordpress.. but you can buat salah satu private kalau hanya nak 1 je orang boleh nampak

have made a back-up of my blog. Thanks for the info I privated the wordpress back-up (I think I will one day switch to self-hosting but not now)..I have a few questions.

Q1. If ever I decide to buy a domain.. I can keep everything I already on the example.wordpress.com and it just upgrades to example.com ?

Q2. If I want to regularly add to this back-up copy, do I just follow the same steps?

Thanks for sharing. I dah import file saya ke wordpress. Next time lepas I buat posting di blogger, I pun kena repeat step 1 – 7 seperti atas untuk buat back-up tak ? Ia akan over-lap dgn post lama yg saya sudah import hari ini tak ? pls adv. tq
