WWW – Word Wide Web
Two meanings – First, loosely used: the whole constellation of resources that can be accessed using Gopher, FTP, HTTP, telnet, USENET, WAIS and some other tools.
Second, the universe of hypertext servers (HTTP servers) which are the servers that allow text, graphics, sound files, etc. to be mixed together.
SGML – Standard Generalized Markup Language
A standard for describing markup languages.
DTD – Document Type Definition
The formal specification of a markup language, written using SGML.
HTML – HyperText Markup Language
HTML is an SGML DTD.
It is a collection of platform-independent styles (indicated by markup tags) that define the various components of a World Wide Web document. HTML was invented by Tim Berners-Lee while at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva.
This is the code that web pages are written in and the browser interprets to turn into the web page you view on the screen. ![]()
HyperText
Generally, any text that contains links to other documents – words or phrases in the document that you can choose and which cause another document to be retrieved and displayed.
HTTP – HyperText Transport Protocol
The protocol for transferring hyper text files across the Internet. Requires a HTTP client program on one end, and an HTTP server program on the other end. HTTP is the most important protocol used in the World Wide Web (WWW). You see it every time you type a website in your browser http://…
Homepage
Several meanings. Originally, the web page that your browser is set to use when it starts up. The more common meaning refers to the main web page for a business, organization, person or simply the main page out of a collection of web pages.
Host
Host in the Internet means a company that has the required servers and software to connect domain names to (IP) Internet Protocol numbers. This is required so that people can view your work from home website when they type your domain name in their browser window. This is where you house your home business website or blog. And, you usually have to pay a monthly or annual fee for the domain hosting service.
